If the number of cases processed, lines of code written or plans drawn per employee rises while unit costs fall, management concludes that the organisation is stronger.

This diagnosis rests on a basic methodological confusion: equating output volume with problem-solving capability.

Architecture, engineering and urban planning offer a way to examine this divergence. Parametric tools can accelerate the exploration of alternatives and also support thermal, solar or structural assessment. That possibility does not remove the need to interpret site conditions, materials and uses. The issue here is an organisational design risk, rather than a quantified historical comparison between weeks of digital drawing and months of manual work.

The immediate delivery metric is impeccable. The problem emerges when the nature of the work performed is examined.

Substituting deliverable speed for judgement

If drawing speed alone is rewarded, teams may stop examining the material consequences of each line and prioritise software parameters or commercial appeal. That bias is not inherent to parametric design: with appropriate assumptions and validation, tools can improve bioclimatic assessment and project quality.

This dynamic can generate three operational fractures that a dashboard focused solely on deliveries does not capture:

1. The indicator that hides a deferred failure

A project delivered quickly can shift costs to operations if orientation, radiation, ventilation or material behaviour have not been validated. Overheating and maintenance are design risks requiring checking. These examples illustrate possible failures; they do not demonstrate a general decline in liveability caused by software or replace a documented case.

2. The atrophy of correction capacity

Depending on automatic results without practising independent checks can weaken physical and mathematical intuition. When an inconsistency appears, the team must check assumptions, units, loads and model limits. Competence loss is not inevitable and can be prevented through training, review and testing.

3. The hollowing out of distinctive value

Using similar platforms can encourage homogeneous solutions if independent objectives, constraints and judgement are not introduced. It does not make every project inevitably interchangeable: quality and differentiation also depend on starting data, design and the team’s evaluation.

The bias of measuring only what suits the committee

Responsibility for this gap lies in the design of institutional supervision systems rather than in technical teams using the tools available to them.

Current dashboards are biased towards what is easy to quantify: hours invested, documents exported and square metres drawn. Everything concerning the robustness of judgement—the ability to sustain a difficult decision before a client, the depth of analysis of civic integration or the competence to redesign a project from scratch without digital assistance—is left out because it is difficult to tabulate.

What is not evaluated can fall outside supervision. Measuring an area’s success solely through speed encourages a less visible delegation of judgement. The response is to complement production with evidence about quality of use, internal knowledge and the capacity to correct decisions.

An outstanding audit for governing bodies

The question an audit committee or board should ask is not how much time a new calculation or design tool saves. The relevant fiduciary question is: which parts of our independent analytical capacity are we no longer exercising when we adopt it?

Celebrating productivity records while degrading the internal knowledge underpinning organisational reliability is not modernisation. It is an operational hollowing out that becomes apparent only when the system fails, the context suddenly changes and the institution discovers too late that no one still remembers how the work was thought through.

Functional performance divergence is an organisational phenomenon in which aggregate production indicators show sustained growth driven by automated tools, while professionals’ internal technical competence in diagnosing problems, correcting deviations and conceiving independent solutions undergoes cumulative, unrecorded deterioration.

[25

post-469","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-productivity-up-capability-down

Productivity and capability: judgement in architecture

<meta name="description" content="Fast drawing does not guarantee liveability.
